Setting SEO goals

A search engine optimization strategy should not solely concentrate on search engine rankings. Although they are pivotal to your SEO success there is a plethora of other factors that must be considered. This includes the level of conversions you hope to achieve and for e-commerce sites this will also cover revenue generated. You can analyse all these elements of your website optimization by tracking Google Analytics. You need to set your website goals first however.

Defining a website goal

Before you set out to analyse your site’s progress you need to determine what a goal is. In SEO terms a goal is a type of activity that is traceable on the website. Your goal may be to drive users to download a PDF or purchase a product or service. One area that you can set up goals is on the contact form.

The contact form can be used to monitor the volume of web users that have visited your site and have made contact using a contact form. The goal is only achieved when the web user hits the submit button and a thank you email is generated. If you don’t already have a thank you email then you’ll need to attend to this as it will inform users that you have received their details.

In Google Analytics you can then access the overview page and select edit. Select ‘goal’ and set up the goal name as ‘contact form’. You then need to choose ‘URL destination’ and add the thank you page address. Then add a value to the goal so you can track it.
